Modern Pillow and an Olympic Kids Craft Tutorial

I was always fearful of making pillows, as I had no idea how to get that fold to work in the back and ensure that my pillow would look good.

It just kept bugging me that I was missing out on doing something fun because I was afraid to learn or more to the fact, afraid I would screw up.   This past weekend, I decided to face my 'pillow fear' and overcome it=)

I decided that a modern pillow was what I wanted to try first.   I am really not sure if modern includes polka dots, but in my world it does.

I used a heavy cotton, almost a canvas type, for the background..figured it would wear well.  I cut little strips of polka dot fabric and then made cuts into the canvas.

What do you think?   I just love looking at it.

Olympic Banner Craft
With every eye in the world on the Olympics, I thought it would be fun to do a kids craft supporting this world wide event.  Especially as their theme centers around quilting.

I gathered up toilet paper rolls, some card stock, or you can use construction paper, should be white, I was going for something a little heavier. And fabric scraps in blue, black, red, yellow, and green. Don't forget a bit of white glue and a stapler.

Begin by cutting the toilet paper rolls into 1/4" rings.   You will need 5 per banner.

Tear your fabric into 1" strips, the length should be about 12" but there is no need to be exact.

Show the child how to roll them around the toilet paper ring. Secure end with a dab of glue.
Cut out a large triangle shape from your construction paper.

Once there are 5 made, one in each colour, glue them to your paper banner, making sure they follow the same colour scheme as the Olympic flag does. Staple tabs out of two 3' pieces of your strip fabric to the short end, or top of your banner.

Make a whole bunch and string them across a room, and you are ready to cheer on the world! Or at least the US vs Canada in hockey=)

Love your pillow. I struggle with that back flap as well. I made each of my sons-in-law and oldest grandson pillows for Christmas this year - fused appliqued! They loved them...whew!

What a great way to use your polka dot fabric. The pillow is both modern and whimsical...I love it. Only you, could come up with such a perfect craft for kids to celebrate the Olympics.
